Cosa si sono detti Bush e Blair

Varie versioni del breve dialogo tra Bush e Blair intercettato al G-8 grazie ai microfoni lasciati inavvertitamente aperti. C'è la trascrizione della Cnn, quelle dell'Indipendent (gustosa, con le feroci frecciatine nei confronti di Blair) e dell'International Herald Tribune. Tra tutte, mi hanno convinto quelle della Bbc e di Slate, dalle quali, riascoltando l'audio, ho cercato di trarre qualche interpretazione:

Bush: Yo, Blair. How are you doing? [La stampa britannica sfotte Blair per questo "Yo" con cui lo apostrofa Bush]
Blair: I'm just...
Bush: You're leaving?
Blair: No, no, no not yet. On this trade thingy... [da qui inizia un passaggio su un problema riguardante il commercio internazionale]
Bush: Yeah, I told that to the man.
Blair: Are you planning to say that here or not?
Bush: If you want me to.
Blair: Well, it's just that if the discussion arises...
Bush: I just want some movement.
Blair: Yeah.
Bush: Yesterday we didn't see much movement.
Blair: No, no, it may be that it's not, it may be that it's impossible.
Bush: I am prepared to say it.
Blair: But it's just I think what we need to be an opposition...
Bush: Who is introducing the trade?
Blair: Angela.
Bush: Tell her to call 'em.
Blair: Yes.
Bush: Tell her to put him on, them on the spot. And thanks for the sweater it's awfully thoughtful of you. [regalo ben poco estivo]
Blair: It's a pleasure.
Bush: I know you picked 'em out yourself...
Blair: Oh, yes absolutely - in fact I knitted it!!!

Bush: What about Kofi Annan? He seems all right. I don't like his ceasefire plan. His attitude is basically ceasefire and everything sort out... but I think... [l'argomento cambia, si parla della crisi libanese]

Blair: Yeah, no I think the thing is really difficult. We can't stop this without getting international presence agreed [la forza d'interposizione proposta da Blair e Annan. Bush sembra scettico sia perché potrebbe rivelarsi solo d'ostacolo per Israele, sia perché gli potrebbe venire richiesto di impiegare nuove truppe]. I think what you guys have talked about which is the criticism of the [UNIFIL]. I am perfectly happy to try and see what the lie of the land is [Blair si offre di aprire le consultazioni per capire chi sarebbe disposto a partecipare], but you need that done quickly because otherwise it will spiral [Blair sembra molto più preoccupato di Bush per la situazione].

Bush: Yeah, I think Condi's gonna go pretty soon.

Blair: Well that's, that's all that matters. But if you... You see it gets it going. [Sembra un'affermazione umiliante quella di Blair. Un'ammissione d'impotenza: "Ciò che importa è che ci pensiate voi"]

Bush: I agree, it's a process... I told her your offer too. [Bush si tiene sul vago. Un "processo", come dire "vedremo..."]

Blair: Well it's only... if she needs the ground prepared as it were. Obviously if she goes out she has to succeed, if it were, whereas i can just go out and talk. [Una cosa ovvia se ci pensate, ma un'ammissione così limpida deve aver ferito l'orgoglio britannico. I giornali inglesi hanno molto maltrattato Blair per come esce da questo stralcio di dialogo]

Bush: See the irony is what they need to do is get Syria to get Hezbollah to stop doing this shit and it's all over... [Qui probabilmente Bush ce l'ha con l'Onu, o forse con il Governo libanese]

Blair: Dunno... Syria...

Bush: Why?

Blair: Because I think this is all part of the same thing...

Bush: [con il boccone in bocca] Yeah [un "sì" non molto convinto]

Blair: Look - What does he think? He thinks if Lebanon turns out fine, if you get a solution in Israel and Palestine. Iraq goes in the right way. [Chi è questo lui? E' la chiave del significato politico di tutta la discussione. Potrebbe essere Annan, ma potrebbe anche essere Assad, il dittatore siriano. Cioè, Blair che immagina il peggior incubo di Assad. Calma in Libano, il processo di pace che riprende tra israeliani e palestinesi e le cose in Iraq che volgono al meglio. Assad teme che queste cose accadano e quindi fomenta Hezbollah]

Bush: Yeah - He's sweet. ["è dolce", sarcastico Bush, una conferma che si potrebbe trattare di Assad e che Bush è abbastanza sicuro del fatto che gli esiti temuti da Assad siano talmente realistici da renderlo così disperato e, tutto sommato, innocuo]

Blair: Yeah... He's had it. And that's what the whole thing is about. It's the same with Iran. [Blair cerca di andare avanti col discorso. Se tutte quelle cose si verificano Assad è perduto. Anche l'Iran è perduto. Così, non bisogna aspettarsi collaborazione da loro. Possibile sia Blair il più neocon?]

Bush: I fell like telling Kofi to call, to get on the phone to Assad and make something happen.

Blair: Yeah.

Bush: We're not blaming Israel... and we're not blaming the Lebanese Government. [Bush non ha nessuna intenzione di fare pressioni su Israele per un cessate-il-fuoco, piuttosto sembra orientato a far terminare a Israele il lavoro sporco - pronto poi, a qualsiasi soluzione diplomatica]
