La «confusione morale» della sinistra

Qualche giorno fa leggevamo basiti su il manifesto che i bambini di Baghdad sono stati «usati dai marines come scudi». E' la sinistra radicale, si dirà, pacifista, antiamericana. Ed è vero. Ma la sinistra sedicente riformista? Di votare sì al rifinanziamento della missione italiana in Iraq non se ne parla. E Prodi, dopo aver buttato giù una bozza di mozione per l'Ulivo perché quel no fosse più presentabile - avanzando proposte già superate o in corso sotto l'egida dell'Onu - adesso che Bertinotti ha posto il veto anche su quello sta cercando di convincere i partiti della ex Fed a non votarlo.

Ma perché la sinistra non riesce a prendere in mano le bandiere di libertà e democrazia? Negli Stati Uniti pare abbiano lo stesso problema, anche se lì il fatto che la sinistra rinunci a quelle bandiere è una novità, stando a quanto scrive Cathy Young sul Boston Globe:

«Per quanto trovi frequentemente seccante la destra di questi tempi, con la sua cinica faziosità, la sua arroganza di potere, le sue politiche di fanatismo religioso, il mio disappunto per i conservatori non mi spedirà mai nel campo dei liberal - perché la risposta al terrorismo anche da parte della sinistra moderata rimane una notevole confusione morale.

E' certamente vero che la guerra in Iraq è stata condotta male; può essere stata un prima di tutto un errore di giudizio. E' tristemente vero che l'atteggiamento cauto verso gli abusi sui prigionieri ha danneggiato la nostra autorità morale nella guerra al terrorismo. Ma riconoscere errori e misfatti non dovrebbe intaccare la chiarezza morale quando si tratta di terrorismo. I jihadisti sono guidati in primo luogo dall'odio per la civiltà occidentale e la sua libertà; i loro obiettivi primari sono civili innocenti; e non possono essere battuti se non con la forza».

A descrivere e denunciare, con la semplicità e la chiarezza che gli appartengono, tutta la «mitologia» della sinistra che incolpa in qualche modo l'America degli attacchi terroristici è Victor David Hanson su National Review: «Le nostre guerre sulla guerra». Ma «ogni elemento» della «narrativa dominante nelle sinistre occidentali» è «falso».

Why does this false narrative, then, persist?

In a word, this version of events brings spiritual calm for millions of troubled though affluent and blessed Westerners. There are three sacraments to their postmodern thinking, besides the primordial fear that so often leads to appeasement.

Our first hindrance is moral equivalence. For the hard Left there is no absolute right and wrong since amorality is defined arbitrarily and only by those in power. Taking back Fallujah from beheaders and terrorists is no different from bombing the London subway since civilians may die in either case... A half-dozen roughed up prisoners in Guantanamo are the same as the Nazi death camps or the Gulag.

Our second shackle is utopian pacifism — "war never solved anything" and "violence only begets violence."... That most evil has ended tragically and most good has resumed through armed struggle — whether in Germany, Japan, and Italy or Panama, Belgrade, and Kabul — is irrelevant.

The third restraint is multiculturalism, or the idea that all social practices are of equal merit. Who are we to generalize that the regimes and fundamentalist sects of the Middle East result in economic backwardness, intolerance of religious and ethnic minorities, gender apartheid, racism, homophobia, and patriarchy? Being different from the West is never being worse.

Se queste teorie sono smentite dai fatti poco importa perché sono come un credo secolare che non teme sfide empiriche. Questi articoli di fede apparentemente riempiono un bisogno per milioni di occidentali, che si sentono colpevoli per i loro privilegi, convinti che la propria cultura li abbia resi spettacolarmente ricchi solo a scapito degli altri.
